- When Joseph was 52 and Elizabeth was 48, they took their family and moved to Illinois coming up the Mississippi River in a canal boat during a big flood. The river was too shallow, during normal water flows to accommodate boats, having not been dredged yet. Their children's ages would have been: Phebe, age 22; Elizabeth, age 18; Ben, age 15; Amira, age 13; and Charles, age 9.

- Elizabeth took the children out to a hill and spent the night in 1844 waiting for the Lord to come. In the morning, as they were returning to the house, they met Joseph, going out to milk the cows. It was not a happy meeting.
