    Obituary 2009  [11
    Kenneth Erhardt
    • This is the obituary for Dad, Kenneth Erhardt, who passed away Friday, February 19, 2010 in Pasadena, CA.

Kenneth was born May 23, 1925 in Redding, CA. His father died in a farm accident when Ken was just 6 years old. He lived with his mother until adulthood in the Redding, Chico and Sacramento areas. Ken enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and served our country until he was discharged in 1946.

Ken and Bobbye met and married in Sacramento, California, June 14, 1947. Ken was attending college under the GI Bill and they soon moved to San Luis Obispo, California to complete his engineering degree at California Polytechnic State College. Ken gained practical experience and supported his family working as a radio technician for the local radio station, KVEC. His first daughter, Carol, was born in 1948. Ken graduated from Cal Poly in 1950.

Because of Ken's radio station experience, he was offered a short-term 4 month job at the NBC radio station in San Francisco. The family quickly relocated after graduation and while in San Francisco, his son Ron was born.

Ken impressed the management at NBC and was offered an opportunity to be transferred to NBC New York where he began to his work in television. Another fast move ensued, this time across country with a family of 4. He initially worked in technical support in the broadcast of black & white television. This prowess in technical matters allowed Ken to become part of the team of engineers who invented the current analog color television system. Ken's second daughter, Pamela, was born in New York in 1952.

Four years later Ken was transferred to Burbank, CA to begin operating the new NBC Color Television Studio. He remained there 35 years until retirement. His key contributions were running technical operations and managing NBC's computerized broadcast media switching center.

After Ken retired from NBC, he and Bobbye moved to Sonora, CA near Yosemite Park. This was their retirement dream, to live close to Yosemite, their favorite place to spend time. We had spent many vacations there as a family, sometimes going 2-3 times a year. They called it "God's Country." They lived there for nearly 10 years and moved back to San Luis Obispo, CA, where they lived in an "Active Retirement Residence" until Bobbye's passing last year. After that, Ken decided to move closer to family and moved to Pasadena close to Pam until he went on to be with our Lord February 19 this year.

Ken was known as a soft spoken man, a good listener, a brilliant but humble engineer, a compassionate and loyal professional and family man. He was faithful to his wife Bobbye providing caregiving during the 10 years she was wheelchair bound. Ken was a man of God, he sang in the church choir and donated to his church both in time setting up sound and television systems as well as financially.

Carol, Alex, Amy, Ron, Doreen, Pam and Lois will all miss his presence in their lives.
