    • After the war, John joined his father working for the Columbia National Forest (now known as the Gifford National Forest) whose headquarters were in Vancouver, Washington. John's station was near Vancouver, and his dad was at the headquarter office during the winter months. There he met his future bride.

John worked for two quarters as a Forester and then two quarters he went to school, until he graduated.

    Third to Fifth Apartments
    • In the summer of 1951, just before their first son was born, they moved to three different types of married student housing on the University of Washington's college campus. Each apartment was larger than the first. Being not long after World War II, housing was scarce, and each offer had to be accepted within 24 hours. The last of these moves was done when Nelda was eight months pregnant. John was off fighting fires, so Nelda could not reach John, but since they desperately needed a larger place, she rented a trailer, hooked it up to the car, and moved everything, hoping that John would like it when he got home. That Friday night, when John came off duty, Nelda had left him a note on the door of the old house, but the note was torn off. A neighbor was fortunately able to direct John to his wife and apartment!

    Sixth home, a house
    • John and Nelda with newborn William moved into a beautiful two-story home at the ranger station in the middle of pine trees. There Nelda learned to cook and can foods on a wood cook stove. Nelda also had the thrill of finding baby frogs everywhere, including the bassinet. She never quite learned how to control the Easy Spin Dry washing machine that walked all over the kitchen when it was used! Nelda carefully followed Dr. Spock's first book on baby care as a new mother.

    • In the winter of 1951, John and Nelda with little William returned to Seattle. There Nelda worked as a new mother and assisted John in his academics by alternating between changing diapers, typing college papers, making formula, cooking, sewing, and housekeeping. It was a very happy time, but also one with little income.

    Eighth home, a cabin
    • The Forest Service assigned them to the Wind River Ranger Station with a little cabin deep in the woods. There they endured what sounded like heavy footsteps that thundered between the walls or in the ceiling each night. After a great deal of effort, Nelda found out that it was the squirrels jumping their way through the structure. Nelda continued to learn how to use a wood cook stove. It was quite an experience to leave the heated part of the cabin to use the rest room in the unheated part in sometimes freezing temperatures. Nelda took on the seventh challenge of refitting the curtains for the windows, getting an oversized carpet to fit in the smaller room, as well as driving down the Columbia Gorge with a baby to visit her mother in Vancouver.

The Wind River Ranger Station conducted pioneering research in the field of growing trees and replanting spoiled forests. It had a very large nursery where trees were grown for large burn areas and watersheds.

    Ranger house
    • Colville is 80 miles north of Spokane, very close to the Canadian border. The move from the Vancouver area was tough emotionally. Nelda was discouraged and pregnant, and the family was poor. The trip to Colville had some very unattractive places along the way. Nelda was not familiar with the area either.

It was thus a surprise to arrive in Colville and find it was a geographical paradise. It had definite eastside weather, beautiful green and heavily timbered hills, and many lakes and rivers.

    Surprise vacation
    • When Bill turned 16 and had just gotten his driver's license, on the spur of the moment one Friday night, the Griffiths family took off to find some kind of relaxation as a family. Maybe they would go get a hamburger or go to a drive-in, or maybe take in a show. Instead they arrived in San Francisco and they swam in the motel swimming pool late at night with their clothes on, toured Fisherman's Wharf, rode the trolley, lulled around on the beach, and then returned home in time for work and school on Tuesday morning. This is the last time the entire family was together to share a vacation.
