    Badly burned
    • When Nelda was a little baby, she was left momentarily on the rocking chair near the wood-burning heat stove. It was long enough for her to fall off the chair and against the stove, burning the side of her face and one arm badly. Mother put carbolic salve on it and left the bandages on for a couple weeks. When the bandages came off, there was no scarring much to the relief of the family!

    Persecution of U.S. German Immigrants
    • Daniel had expected to live out the rest of his days in Canada and so had become a Canadian citizen. When he re-entered the United States, he had not tried be reinstated as a United States citizen. Since the family was German, the war with Germany was difficult for German Americans. Neighbors soon began to say they were “pro-German” and the school children would taunt the Erhardt children in school. Things got so bad they had to take the children out of school for several days. It was at this point that Daniel and Julia spoke German very rarely unless around her father.

Julia had a service flag in the window with two stars in it—one for her son, and one for her youngest brother, Louis Schunke. She would knit socks following the Red Cross instructions. Lily knit washcloths, and the older girls knit sweaters, mufflers, caps, etc. for the soldiers.

Dan was not sure where his parents stood while at war, but his letters were filled with such patriotism that it awoke an interest among the younger children. In one letter his mother wrote that she was proud of his stand as a citizen and soldier. He replied he was very glad, because he really wanted to hear that.

    Fire
    • Daniel and Bill were away logging in the hills. The fire season had started, and the main fires were just 10 miles away. Then the wind shifted suddenly and large pieces of burning bark and flaming cones started dropping in the yard, and soon the nearby woods were aflame. The men of the neighborhood came, hoping to stop the fire from heading south and endangering many homes in the valley. Lilly and Ed were sent to draw water and fill the barrels. Their arms ached, and two men stopped for a drink who had been fighting the fire for several days, but realized there were no men there, just mother and small children. The men quickly soaked the roof with the water and then lay in the grass for a couple hours to get some sleep. Lily was stationed at the haystack to put out any flames as they started. Even three year old Nelda helped mother carry goods from the house, and protect them with wet quilts and blankets. The oldest daughters found a way from town to help mother and spent the night watching the house. Sleeping for the youngsters was hard. From the window they could see and hear the beautiful pine trees burning around them, and when they slept they had nightmares about being in the middle of a huge fire, only to wake up and see it was true. The wind shifted that night and a few days later there were only smoldering posts and stumps to remind them of the fire, but the house had been saved.

    Move from Redding, Monday's Progress
    • By early May, 1920, the family was on the road. Roads were not paved and most were single lane with deep ruts, and following farm fence lines. Creeks had to be forded, hills and mountains crossed. The area has some of the most rugged terrain, and the 520 mile trip took four long days. The trip was made in an old Maxwell open touring car, Daniel had purchased. The Maxwell had a good engine, and 36 horsepower. Dan was made the family driver, with Ed helping briefly. Six people rode in the car (Dan was 24, Ed was 14, mother Julia was 42, Lily was 12, Clara was 9, and Nelda was 5) with the barrel of dishes, and other household articles being the seats. The running boards held the luggage. Leaving Redding at 8 a.m. they reached Yreka at midnight. They managed to cover over 100 miles of exceedingly rough mountainous terrain in the 16 hours.

    Farm house
    • Daniel had described the house in glowing terms, but Julia's heart sank when she saw it. The house did have enough rooms in the two stories, but it was crudely built and the rooms were not finished. There was a living room carpet, but when it was removed, it was there to cover the holes that had been cut through the floor. There was a pump by the back door, but no running water in the kitchen or bathroom. In spite of these disappointing things, Julia went right to work with her good taste and ability to "make do."

    Rebuilt house
    • In the Spring of 1922, it was decided to move closer to Portland, so the now two girls would be closer to the high school and perhaps Daniel could find easier employment. This two story house was in Vancouver, but was really a rebuilt house after having caught fire. It came with an acre. The down payment was met from the sale of the Orchards house, and the annual mortgage payment looked feasible. The house did have running water and electricity! Nelda's school was just across the street.

    Nelda Lou's memories
    • Granddaughter Nelda Griffith recalls with fond memories the days they spent together, and how friendly the whole family was to her, her mother, brother, and even her children:

“Grandpa Erhardt brought us food from the garden and his wonderful homemade bread. I particularly liked being around the fishpond with him at their home in Vancouver, WA or in his shop with him. His tools were very few but he could make absolutely anything. Aunt Nellie and I played lots of duets on the piano when I was there. We loved playing games around the big table in the kitchen, with the wood range putting out a lot of heat. I can still hear the yelling as we played, I think, Pitch. Then, outdoors, the yard was beautiful with all Grandma’s flowers and the fishpond. Grandpa’s garden and fruit garden were bountiful. I can still remember picking the grapes and the raspberries and eating them on the spot. One time, we were lighting firecrackers on July 4 and I had been given a whole string of them. Someone lit them (I don’t remember who) and for some reason I froze and I couldn’t let go of them. I did, just before they got to my hand as everyone was yelling at me.”

    Surgery
    • It took several days for the swelling to go down and for the doctors to make a decision as to how to handle her situation.

A company representative came and assisted the doctors in replacing the knee and installing it to the weakened bone. It was sucessful, but Nelda had given up hope of getting better. She wanted to die on the operating table, and was disaapointed she did not. The surgery was very risky for a person in her condition.

    Name Nelda Grace Douthit
Physical Description Gloria Perryman memories  [19
    • "Aunt Nellie was the only person to regularly write to me and the only connection I had with the Erhardts after Julia, Leona and Lily were gone. She was a great mother to Peggy .... I have all of Nellies' letters that I keep in a binder as going through some hard times with dad gave me comfort."
    Physical Description Regrets  [20
    • Nelda Douthit when alone or with family would carefully go over conversations she had earlier and wish she had kept her mouth shut about this or that. In her scrapbook, after she passed away, she had saved a card that said: "Daily Prayer, Oh Lord, Help me to keep my big mouth shut until I know what I am talking about." It is just the sort of thing she would love and even say! Of course, very few would accuse her of being a blabber, in fact, she was quite a private person, even though very publicly involved at church and work. Her introspection kept her quite mindful about what she said and did.
