    Farm house
    • The family moved to a farm in Whitemouth, where Daniel and his friends built a large cabin room with a loft. Julia loved the white birch floors there. Here life was difficult. They were the last house from the town in an unsettled area. Daniel hunted moose for meat. The garden grew fast. Daniel and the older children put in long days doing farm work while Julia canned all the fruit and vegetables available. They froze beans in blocks of ice which they sawed off as needed for food. There were no doctors for miles, or any schools.

    60 acre farm
    • The farm was in the Pacheco district which was just six miles south-east of Redding, and bought a 60 acre farm and small house. The house was 24' by 24' and there were nine of them to fit into it. There were two small bedrooms and they made the pantry into a third bedroom for the boys. There was a bed (filled with corn husks or straw) for each room. Those in each room shared the bed, the parents getting one, the girls another, and the boys the third little one. Dan cut holes into the plaster so he could climb into the attic to find room to sleep. Later, when he moved into Redding, the girls would use this as a place to go and not be disturbed to read. The living and kitchen areas were the same room, but Daniel built a cupboard to act as a little divider to separate the rooms, and an old pump organ was backed up to the back of the cupboard.

The ground in this area is very rocky and of very poor quality. Daniel and the boys tried to raise alfalfa, oats and barley. Mother tried to keep a garden. The Insect pests were numerous, making harvests pretty grim.

About 20 feet from the back door was a well, and it was the only source for the water on the 60 acres. All the water had to be hand drawn in buckets, and barrels would be filled to have the horses drag to where it was needed.

    • Daniel was oldest child and the backbone of the Erhardt family being the one who got things done. Dad tended to joke around with the boys under his charge, but it was Dan who kept everyone in line and focused. It was also Dan that the boys answered to more than Dad!

    Severe Flooding
    • The snows melted in the mountains so quickly they caused severe flooding of the rivers and creeks. Daniel at first tried to dig ditches to turn the water away from their house, but it was useless. While he hitched the horses to the wagon, mother gathered a few belongings and herded the children into the wagon. The boys were left with one neighbor on higher ground and the girls with another neighbor. Both Dan and Julia returned home against the advice of the neighbors. The river rose so fast that in half an hour the valley was a “mirror.” The house was up off the ground four feet, so it did not damage their floor, as it did so many others, but came up to it. They were about ¾ of a mile from the Sacramento river.

    Move from Redding, Monday's Progress
    • By early May, 1920, the family was on the road. Roads were not paved and most were single lane with deep ruts, and following farm fence lines. Creeks had to be forded, hills and mountains crossed. The area has some of the most rugged terrain, and the 520 mile trip took four long days. The trip was made in an old Maxwell open touring car, Daniel had purchased. The Maxwell had a good engine, and 36 horsepower. Dan was made the family driver, with Ed helping briefly. Six people rode in the car (Dan was 24, Ed was 14, mother Julia was 42, Lily was 12, Clara was 9, and Nelda was 5) with the barrel of dishes, and other household articles being the seats. The running boards held the luggage. Leaving Redding at 8 a.m. they reached Yreka at midnight. They managed to cover over 100 miles of exceedingly rough mountainous terrain in the 16 hours.

Died 31 Aug 1931  Redding, Shasta, California, United States Find all individuals with events at this location
    • Ken offers the summary of his dad's death which happened on Aug. 31, 1931:

"My mother's family owned 40 acres in Shingletown on which there was a good sized house and a well with a roof over it. A forest fire burned through the area, demolishing the house and burning the roof over the well, allowing debris to fall into the well. We had been using that place for weekend getaways.

"After the fire, the first thing to fix was removing the debris from the well so it could again supply water.

"Grandpa Erhardt and my Dad were cleaning the well, Dad in the well and Grandpa pulling up the debris in a bucket as Dad sorted it out. After the cleaning was finished, Dad climbed onto the bucket so Grandpa could hoist him out. What they didn't realize is that the fire had burned a lot of the oxygen out of the air in the well. That resulted in Dad passing out before he reached the top. He fell back into the well, breaking his neck."

Although there were several that wanted to take Merle into their family, she thought it best to remain in their home in Redding, and let Ken go to school there. Pat Coleman, the pastor of First Baptist Church performed the funeral, and he later became a relative of the family by marrying Leona, Dan's sister.
