    Farm house
    • The family moved to a farm in Whitemouth, where Daniel and his friends built a large cabin room with a loft. Julia loved the white birch floors there. Here life was difficult. They were the last house from the town in an unsettled area. Daniel hunted moose for meat. The garden grew fast. Daniel and the older children put in long days doing farm work while Julia canned all the fruit and vegetables available. They froze beans in blocks of ice which they sawed off as needed for food. There were no doctors for miles, or any schools.

    60 acre farm
    • The farm was in the Pacheco district which was just six miles south-east of Redding, and bought a 60 acre farm and small house. The house was 24' by 24' and there were nine of them to fit into it. There were two small bedrooms and they made the pantry into a third bedroom for the boys. There was a bed (filled with corn husks or straw) for each room. Those in each room shared the bed, the parents getting one, the girls another, and the boys the third little one. The living and kitchen areas were the same room, but Daniel built a cupboard to act as a little divider to separate the rooms, and an old pump organ was backed up to the back of the cupboard.

The ground in this area is very rocky and of very poor quality. Daniel and the boys tried to raise alfalfa, oats and barley. Mother tried to keep a garden. The Insect pests were numerous, making harvests pretty grim.

About 20 feet from the back door was a well, and it was the only source for the water on the 60 acres. All the water had to be hand drawn in buckets, and barrels would be filled to have the horses drag to where it was needed.

    Severe Flooding
    • The snows melted in the mountains so quickly they caused severe flooding of the rivers and creeks. Daniel at first tried to dig ditches to turn the water away from their house, but it was useless. While he hitched the horses to the wagon, mother gathered a few belongings and herded the children into the wagon. The boys were left with one neighbor on higher ground and the girls with another neighbor. Both Dan and Julia returned home against the advice of the neighbors. The river rose so fast that in half an hour the valley was a “mirror.” The house was up off the ground four feet, so it did not damage their floor, as it did so many others, but came up to it. They were about ¾ of a mile from the Sacramento river.

    • Juliette and her brother Dan found they could save on expenses by renting an apartment together, and living in town. Lonie, their sister, could stay there and go to high school while working to help with the food bill.

    Persecution of U.S. German Immigrants
    • Daniel had expected to live out the rest of his days in Canada and so had become a Canadian citizen. When he re-entered the United States, he had not tried be reinstated as a United States citizen. Since the family was German, the war with Germany was difficult for German Americans. Neighbors soon began to say they were “pro-German” and the school children would taunt the Erhardt children in school. Things got so bad they had to take the children out of school for several days. It was at this point that Daniel and Julia spoke German very rarely unless around her father.

Julia had a service flag in the window with two stars in it—one for her son, and one for her youngest brother, Louis Schunke. She would knit socks following the Red Cross instructions. Lily knit washcloths, and the older girls knit sweaters, mufflers, caps, etc. for the soldiers.

Dan was not sure where his parents stood while at war, but his letters were filled with such patriotism that it awoke an interest among the younger children. In one letter his mother wrote that she was proud of his stand as a citizen and soldier. He replied he was very glad, because he really wanted to hear that.

    Fire
    • Daniel and Bill were away logging in the hills. The fire season had started, and the main fires were just 10 miles away. Then the wind shifted suddenly and large pieces of burning bark and flaming cones started dropping in the yard, and soon the nearby woods were aflame. The men of the neighborhood came, hoping to stop the fire from heading south and endangering many homes in the valley. Lilly and Ed were sent to draw water and fill the barrels. Their arms ached, and two men stopped for a drink who had been fighting the fire for several days, but realized there were no men there, just mother and small children. The men quickly soaked the roof with the water and then lay in the grass for a couple hours to get some sleep. Lily was stationed at the haystack to put out any flames as they started. Even three year old Nelda helped mother carry goods from the house, and protect them with wet quilts and blankets. The oldest daughters found a way from town to help mother and spent the night watching the house. Sleeping for the youngsters was hard. From the window they could see and hear the beautiful pine trees burning around them, and when they slept they had nightmares about being in the middle of a huge fire, only to wake up and see it was true. The wind shifted that night and a few days later there were only smoldering posts and stumps to remind them of the fire, but the house had been saved.

    House
    • Phone number was 241-0542

Julliete had grape vines and some fruit trees that were always a joy to harvest. She also kept a nice sized garden until she could no longer do the work in her later years. Anyone visiting her was always sent away with a bag or two of fresh home-grown fruit and vegetables!

Continental Street was about the roof level of the house on the east side of the house, and the city put in a retaining wall to hold the street up. Butte Street in the front was at her house level, and rose to the level of Continental street in front of the house. This created a kind of pocket area that protected the trees on the west side of the house. Although Redding is known for its hot days, her swamp cooler and shaded house was fairly comfortable all summer.

She had a boarder to help pay bills, but in the last years, when her last boarder passed away, she lived alone. The house was hers until she left it, at which time it reverted to her husband's children. Her husband's children would check in on her and kept an eye on things, helping with repairs. The city hospital, freeway, and other city endeavors were all thwarted by that "old lady" on the corner who refused to accept any deals offered to get her to move out of the way of "progress." Hardly had she been buried when the old ramshackle house was demolished, the ground it was on raised with fill dirt, and a cancer treatment center built in its place.
