    Sunday School teacher
    • Maude was a Sunday School teacher at the Baptist church where the Daniel Erhardt family were members. Lily Erhardt was in her class, and William took a "liking" to Maude. The family was disappointed, because William was 10 years younger than Maude, and they wished he was "interested" in someone more his own age. Even so, Maude was a favored visitor to the Erhardt house.

    New House
    • The house was on the corner of 26th and K Street (2614) and was built by Grandpa Daniel Erhardt and Arthur Stowell, Maude's Uncle Arthur, for the widow Maude Erhardt and children Leonard and Nelda in 1938, the year after William Erhardt died. There were two lots-the house being built on the corner lot. The men also built a very small little house on the back of the lot and Grandmother Emma Mead lived in that for about five years.

The house was first heated by a wood space heater. Wood was delivered and Leonard split it. Nelda had the job of storing the wood under the house and then retrieving it as it was needed. She said the job was "Yuck!" The space under the house was very low, so she had to crawl on her hands and knees to do it. She was so very glad when they later got gas for heating!

The house had an old 4-legged bathtub and an unfinished
attic where Leonard hung out. Maude always had a fairly large garden in the front yard. Leonard hated that so one time
when his mother, Maude, was in the hospital he took out the garden (which was then bearing vegetables) and planted a lawn. After that, Maude never tried to plant a garden again.

In 1942, Harold Mead (Maude Erhardt's brother) decided he would live with his mother (Emma Mead); and he built a very nice three bedroom home next to the first house on the second empty lot. The address of this second house was 2610 K Street. It is a three bedroom home with 1 bathroom, and is 1,334 square feet. The house had a nice basement in it (and Nelda Griffiths still dreams about going down the stairs into that basement looking for her grandmother). Harold Mead lived there for a while then went off to Ketchikan to work there. Emma Mead lived there until she died, in 1949.

The family that then bought the house from Harold Mead was good friends of Nelda Griffiths and lived in that house until a few years ago. They died and it was sold in 2002.

The houses were very close to the Vancouver Barracks where, during the war, prisoners were kept. They often got loose and would be found on the back porch. Maude would feed them and then call the Patrol to come and get them. She would say "they are just kids and not responsible for the War." The barracks is still there and after the war was a Veteran's hospital.

A young man bought the Maude Erhardt home from Leonard and was still living there until about 2009. He loved the house, and Nelda Griffiths would drive by once in a while and he usually would come out to talk to her. He never changed a thing in the house, not even repainting it, but it was in very good condition.

    Newspaper mailer
    • Maud found employment as a mailer for the Vancouver Evening Colombian. The job involved wrapping, addressing and mailing 900 newspapers five days a week. This job was in the back room of the newspaper. After school, Nelda would join her mother and help roll, stamp and mail the newspapers. At the same time, Leonard had a newspaper delivery route he did.

Being the back room, the men there were very course and did a lot of swearing. The language really offended Maud and she would end up crying. The Newspaper finally agreed to let Nelda take over the job for her mother, Maud, if Maud continued being the one getting paid for the job.

    • The marriage of Maude Emma Mead to William Eugene Erhardt was viewed askance because Maude was 10 years older than William. His parents were against the marriage, so he had to wait till he turned 21 to get married. The day before his birthday, he came home to talk to his mother after dark. Dad had gone to bed, since he had to get up early for work. Mother was quite upset, worrying that his wife would not be there to help him as he aged and became incapacitated. If he married, he was made to promise he would bring his new bride to the house. He did, and she was welcomed as a daughter from that day forward, not to say she was ever not welcome before then! Maude was 31 when they got married. The marraige was performed by Rev. Thornton.
